In this article, it talks about the violation of the first amendment rights. The first amendment gives U.S. citizens the right to freedom of speech and press, forming assemblies, peacefully petitioning, and specifically in this article, freedom of religion. In mid May, Fatme Dakroub was pulled over and put under arrest for a supposedly unpaid traffic ticket having her take off her hijab. She decided to file a lawsuit against Ocean County Sheriff Department for allegedly violating her rights of the first amendment. This article sums up the story of Fatme Dakroub and why she is filing a lawsuit against the Ocean County Sheriff Department. It began when she was pulled over and arrested for supposedly not paying a traffic ticket. After arriving at the jail, she was forced to remove her hijab, a religious head covering. Before removing her hijab however she had requested for a female officer to oversee this arrangement, but was denied the request by the three male officers in the room by saying that, “it was not an option”. For Dakroub, having her hijab off and showing her hair, neck, and ears to the male police officers was an infraction to her religious beliefs and faith. Not only was she forced to take off her hijab, but she was not allowed any other choice besides taking off her hijab. She was not given the option to have her hijab patted down, which is completely valid and when she asked for a female officer to oversee the arrangement she was denied the request. When Dakroub was forced to stay in a holding cell, she was not allowed the comfort of having her hijab back.
