The novel Fear Has a Name depicts a family, stalked by a man from the mothers past who has the strong desire to marry her. The man attempts to draw his childhood love back to himself and after failing to do so he resorts to more extreme measures. The novel includes many Christian principals and surprises making it hard for the reader to put down.
There two main genres in this novel include Christian fiction and suspense. The novel upholds a Christian viewpoint and shows clear Christian traits in both the characters and the underlying theme. The Crittendon’s are trying to trust God and lean on Him in times of hardship. There are also continuous Biblical references and Christian principals are thoroughly discussed. Years ago, Mapes wife was at home with their baby, when a man violently entered their house. His wife was forced to grab the baby and run to a neighbor's house. A few years later, he had a dream about a man loitering around the front door of a family's home, ready to break-in. He woke up and immediately wrote down every feature about the man he saw in the dream. He later became the antagonist, Granger Meade. Granger was unwanted by his parents and bullied in his youth. Mapes has always had a soft spot for underdogs and people who are bullied. He wanted to explore the topic of bullying in the novel and follow a boy who was unwanted and mistreated as a child into adulthood. As the novel goes on, she struggles with the circumstances and chooses to trust in God. Pam deals with her house being broken into, being stalked, and getting kidnapped all as a result of being kind in her childhood. Although her faith is continuously tested, she grows closer to God, puts more trust in Him, and shows herself strong in every situation. God is by her side, and it is apparent throughout the entire novel. Jack Crittenton, Pam’s husband, is a reporter who has been given the challenge of a story about a suicidal pastor who disappeared. While he works to try and uncover the mysteries of the story, he must also balance his family who are scared because someone is stalking them. He must figure out who the man is and what his motives are so that he can keep his family safe. Jack begins to stray away from God because he is frustrated that He is letting this happen to his family. At the end of the novel, he comes to realize that everything happened for a reason and God was the one who got them
