A person’s biggest fear can reveal their deepest secrets. In the book Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys, each character has a fear that directly relates to their darkest secret. None of the characters were born with that fear, but came to fear it due to their life experiences. Fear is not bad in itself; rather, being unable to conquer a fear can result in a problem. Our fears do not define us, but our willingness and ability to conquer the fears does. Joana’s biggest fear was harm coming to her family on her account. Florian’s fears evolved throughout the book. As a young man, Florian was extremely talented at forgery. He could make copies of anything and they were near identicals to the original. With this talent, Florian became an apprentice for Dr. Lange. Florian believed that Dr. Lange was helping him, and only Florian’s father realized the doctor’s real intentions. Dr. Lange was just using Florian. Dr. Lange introduced Florian to Erich Koch, the head of a local Nazi party. Koch and the Nazis had been stealing art and hiding it in the secret Amber Room. When Florian finds unopened letters that he had written to Dr. Lange, he realizes that he has been tricked. Dr. Lange and Erich Koch have just been using Florian.
Florian’s father was employed by men who attempted to murder Hitler. As a result, the Nazis murdered Florian’s father and sent a bill for the execution. Florian wanted revenge at Hitler. Stealing Hitler’s favorite piece of art was a good place to begin. In revenge, Florian hides the key to the Amber Room, a secret room where the Nazis were hiding to many famous artworks they stole, in the hollow heel of his boot, and steals Hitler’s favorite piece of art, an amber swan.
