As William Faulkner once said, “Our tragedy today is a general and universal physical fear so long sustained by now that we can even bear it” (Faulkner 872). Whether it is the monster under the bed, the fear of spiders, or the sense of panic that arises in a small space, fear is always present. This is true even if it only shows itself as butterflies that flutter in the stomach. Fear is important only because it is concrete and will never go away (Hemingway 487), and if an author can identify the fear that contributes to the formation of the human condition, he or she can make visible a truth that all of society can attest to: fear will always plague, but fear alone cannot kill. All around the world, people have rights that are restricted, with the only thing left in their life being soul. To have some form of liberation, people must tap into their soul and let others see it. Though not all people are physically free, everyone has a voice and unique ideas that can never truly be taken away. Almost everyone will likely face repression in their life, and the writer must guide them down the path to understand they are not alone in that struggle. The idea that everybody has a soul is crucial, for souls are what spark inspiration, shown by Nick Bantock in The Forgetting Room when a concept called duende is introduced. The main character Armon initially defines duende as “ Evil spirit; inspiration”, and realizes after a transformative journey that “ Duende wasn’t a mere concept, it was the essence of existence” (Bantock 84). Duende, in short, is another word for soul; something everybody has. Armon escapes from his false self-image and discovers his true artistic self after he finds his soul, simply because he finds his inspiration in life. This makes Bantock similar to Angelou, for both stories show it is important to tap into soul in order to reach a form of freedom whether it be from self repression or societal repression. The duende may be deep down, but it is there and can be reached. Duende is what inspires people and motivates change and creation within the world. Without this concept of soul that flows through everybody and inspires the mass of humanity, there would be no motivation for any form of alteration in the world. If the writer can spread enough inspiration, the reader can become passionate to make a change in the world. The writer must put his soul onto paper in order to inspire others and begin them down the path to find their own
