March 17, 2023 Dear Readers, Fear. Fear is defined as being afraid of someone or something that is likely to be dangerous, painful or threatening. Should you fear your family? Should you fear your own brother?
We live our lives in fear. Some of us fear failure, maybe you fear the dark, others fear heights. While some of humanities fears may be irrational, there is no denying that everyone experiences fear. But how does fear affect us? How does it affect our actions?
Seen in the eyes of many as a joke or more than often confused with fear due to it’s many similar characteristics. In his article called, “ Searching the Brain for the Roots of Fear”, published in January 2012 on The New York Times, Joseph LeDoux, gives his opinion about anxiety to those who don’t know anything about it. He proves that anxiety occurs when we over anticipate things, causing fear within ourselves. Throughout his article he provides multiple scenarios and situations showing his audience how anxiety works, and how it differentiates from fear. Fear is a feeling we all have felt at one moment in our lives.
Is fear the only thing to fear? Maybe it is, maybe it is not. Fear is a strong emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Some people use fear to control the people around them. Someone that uses fear to control others is called a demagogue.

Fear and the unknown can cause people to do things that they wouldn't normally do in the right mind. Also when people want all the power they'll do what it takes to get it. A play from 1953 called, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, showed how fear affects people's thoughts. It started with a group of girls dancing in the woods. They feared getting beaten or in trouble, so they began accusing other people in the town of Salem of witchcraft.
Sam Robert’s article, “A Decade of Fear” explains how McCarthyism turned Americans against each other by generating mass hysteria and dealing with the situation in an unprofessional manner. McCarthy generated mass hysteria when he publicly accused 205 people of being a part of the communist party during one of his speeches. The author states “... news of McCarthy’s accusation against the State Department of President Harry Truman sent shock waves across the nation…. and eventually made his name synonymous with a decade-long period of investigations- labeled ‘witch hunts’ by his critic- to uncover Communist infiltration in American life.” The authors point is that since McCarthy made his accusations public, he caused the nation to be frenzy.
African Americans all had fear in their eyes everyday from the time they woke up till the time they would fall asleep. Being a person of color they knew anything could happen to them at any time. African Americans feared death, incarceration and lynching all because the color of their skin. For instance, “Explain to your six-year-old daughter why she can’t go to the public amusement park ... when she is told that Funtown is closed for colored children…developing an unconscious bitterness towards white people” (King 224).
Fear is not always a harmful emotion. Through fear, we have learned life-long lessons that not everything will work in our favor. We have grown around the definition that fear is “an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain or be a threat” but never that the emotion is a natural and a helpful response. The Crucible, Farewell to Manzanar, and a George Takei interview all provide examples of how fear can be both harmful and beneficial.
Fear can be very advantageous when it comes to surviving. Fear inhibits you from doing risky actions that can put you and others in danger; it keeps you cautious and careful. Even though fear helps you when surviving, fear can harm you in life. Fear can cause paranoia that keeps you from enjoying life. You start to obsess over minimal things leading to hallucination.
Fear can be defined as an unpleasant feeling triggered by a situation. It is an emotion encountered by every human being. However, the reactions of people to fear may vary. Indeed, it ranges from the loss of rationality to the capacity of adaptation in extreme conditions. Thus, fear can be perceived as a weapon to control and manipulate society.
Fear is what you make of it because nothing is inherently scary it is what you take from the object or experience that makes it scary and fills your head with fear. This can have an effect on society and how people and their respective governments react to types of issues and problems. This leads to in extreme cases war and mass murder of a society that is being exploited as a scapegoat. In the book Lord of the Flies the author William Golding suggest the impact fear has on human nature and how it disrupts order and disorder in a society.
Fear influences people to take extreme measures and act irrationally. In The Crucible, fear plays a major role in prompting people to pursue their personal desires and use their power to harm others. On the other hand, in “Extended Forecast: Bloodshed”, fear leads to violence and upheavals as an explanation of superstition for drastic climate changes. In The Crucible, the initial fear of Abigail and her friends getting in trouble for the dancing in the woods prompts the girls to start accusing people.

I personally have never bought or owned a car before I could use the internet in so many levels mainly to inform myself on the pros and cons of purchasing a car, whether this one is brand new or used. Analyzing my situation if I go to a car dealership without knowing anything someone could easily take advantage of me because I do not have any experience in this type of market.
