Federalism Compared to a Unitary System Federalism is a system of Government which came from the federalists. A unitary system, also known as a unitary state, is a sovereign state governed as a single entity. There are many similarities and differences between a federal system and a unitary system. People often wonder what the difference between a federal and unitary Government is. Do you know the difference? The difference is that federal Government is given the power to an elected member of the states. A Unitary Government controls all of the Government. Due to having many similarities, a lot of the time people get the two confused. A unitary system is a way of organizing the Government. This is done so that the power is focused in the central government. The United States uses a federal system. This means that between the Government and the states they are sharing power. The states are all a unitary system on their own. A federal system divides power. Power is divided between both a central and a regional government. This system gains some of its power from from the United States Constitution. People tend to get unitary and federal systems of Government confused. As a result of this disadvantage, the unitary system is often highly looked down on. Federalism also has many advantages and disadvantages. Federalism is very good in terms of problem solving. It creates policies and helps with addressing local needs, and the state Governments very highly consider these. Federalism does not require a majority rule for citizens. Over time, more and more people get elected into office. Because of this federalism of Government is becoming more and more of an expense.
