History of FedEx Corporation FedEx Express, formally known as Federal Express, is the express transportation segment of FedEx Corporation. FedEx Corporation runs four independently ran segments under their umbrella: FedEx Express, FedEx Ground, FedEx Freight, and FedEx Services. FedEx delivers packages and freight to more than 375 destinations in 220 countries worldwide each day. FedEx main competitors are United Parcel Services and DHL Express. FedEx has approximately 49% of the total worldwide market share in express transportation although there are regional variances. The idea of Fedex came when Federick Smith, during a school assignment wrote on the inefficiency of mail delivery companies of the day in its use of air routes (FedEx, 2015). In August of 1971, Smith was able to see on his own the difficulties of having packages delivered in one to two days. Thus revisiting his college paper, the idea of Federal Express was born. This idea would be the first in American history, in less than 10 years to reach $1billion dollars, without the need of any mergers.
Mission and Vision Statement The mission of FedEx Corporation can be seen to be as focused as the business itself.
