In the world we live in today, parents want what is best for their children. Every culture has their own way of raising their children to their standards. But what exactly classifies something as being the best for their children? The major conflict can be seen between cultures around the world as they all have their own opinions on how things should be done. One controversial topic that still lingers around is female circumcision. A plethora of things play a role in helping parents decide whether or not they want their daughters to undergo this procedure. In order to understand the reasoning at hand, it requires a look at both sides.

However, from a cultural standpoint, a mother from an FGM culture would support this circumcising since their mothers had this procedure done to protect them from the dangers of the world. But one might ask, how is FGM different from that and plastic surgeries and body modifications? The answer to this question is little to no difference at all. Majority of the time the body modifications also have negative consequences to go along with it. This may be apparent when the person is not satisfied with the procedure. Often the person will feel self-conscious about themselves and live in regret. Much similar to the girls who had undergone FGM. However, some cultures are supporting of infant circumcising such as the United States. This procedure often is seen as a health benefit rather than a burden. Because of that reason alone, it is culturally accepted. In contrast to FGM and body modifications that leave more than just superficial damage. Interestingly enough, both body modification and FGM done for cultural reasons rather than health reasons. The FGM article reads, “It’s amazing how many people are in mental health care because of their culture.” This quote shows how FGM impacts people despite the intentions of it being good.
