Female Professional Athletes’ Struggle for Cash Female professional athletes strive to gain equal pay with male professional athletes. Female athletes have been fighting this issue since the beginning of women’s sports, and I think that it is time to take a stand. Male athletes are getting paid more for the exact same sport causing an uproar in the world of athletics. I feel very strongly about this issue because I am a female athlete myself and understand what it is like to be awarded less than the men. I believe that Women’s athletic facilities are not as user friendly as the men’s and women are not awarded the same amount of money when they win the same title as the men. Women’s athletic facilities need to be updated in order for the women to have better practicing and playing conditions. Based on personal experience I can speak to this issue, I play on the volleyball team at my high school and we are a very successful program at the school. However, no matter how many state championships we win, we will still be stuck we the same old, worn-out, smelly equipment we have had for years. They say men are more valuable because the men’s sports have a higher number of viewers than the women. However, as stated in Marissa Payne’s article “The Serena Bump? Women’s U.S. Open final sells out before men for first time” in The Washington Post (2015), “It’s no wonder tickets for the U.S. Open women’s singles final sold out before the men’s final for the first time”. Sponsors also believe that women do not last as long physically as men, therefore, they do not think they are worthy investments.
