It is impossible for society to thrive in a world where many are not treated as equals; especially when continued cries for equality are ignored and even the slightest change seems like monumental task. Thomas Jefferson, a former United States president and founding father of the Declaration of Independence, claimed that “All men are created equal and are endowed with unalienable, human rights.” These unalienable rights are intended to apply to all members of society: women included. Presently, a strong example of the rights of women being ignored is seen in the United States Women’s National Soccer Team (USWNT). For example, according to the New York Times, a player on the women’s national team is paid three thousand six hundred dollars per game, which is seventy-two percent of the five thousand dollars that a player on the men’s national team is paid. The one thousand three hundred fifty dollar win bonus received by a female player is a mere sixteen percent of the eight thousand one hundred sixty-six dollar win bonus paid to a male player. If the women's team were to lose all twenty of their yearly required matches, a player would earn seventy two thousand dollars and if the men’s team were to lose all twenty matches, a male player would earn one hundred thousand dollars. If the men’s team were to win all of their games, a player would be paid two hundred sixty three thousand dollars whereas a female player would be paid ninety-nine thousand. A female would be paid one thousand dollars less for winning all twenty matches than a male would be paid for losing all twenty.
