Both philosophers, bell hooks and Frantz Fanon, address the problem of equality. In Feminism is for Everybody, hooks defines feminism as a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation and oppression. Hooks begins by stating feminism is for everybody (2000) and that it is an attempt to end sexism though reform feminism. In “Racism and Culture,” Fanon investigates whether ending racism is due to cultural relativity. Gloria Anzaldua wrote Borderlands/La Frontera in which she describes the struggles she faced through her insecurities. In agreement, Fanon believes racism can be eliminated once the idea that superiority exists is rejected amongst people. This essay agrees that the best way to end sexism is having an outlook geared towards hook’s idea of revolutionary feminism.
It is evident that bell hooks prefers revolutionary feminism because it is something that everyone can believe in and it is seen as more of a long term fix compared to reform feminism. “To end patriarchy (another way of naming the institutionalized sexism) we need to be clear that we are all participants in perpetuating sexism until we change our minds and hearts, until we let go of sexist thought and action and replace it with feminist thought and action” (hooks, ix). Some of these activities include driving cars and playing sports and even though the media portrays men as stronger and more masculine, they do not fail to portray women as inferior and weak. It may be seen that men are more masculine due to the amount of people engaging in the same activities like driving; however, women can be just as knowledgeable as men in cars. Many women are known to be professional golfers, competing in the Olympics, even though golf has been known to be associated with Tiger Woods, a dominant male figure. I have not disregarded that women can be sexist as well; however, it is known in our society that the male is the dominant figure and this is something that can be changed so that men and women obtain the same amount of equality and praise for doing the same activity. If men and women were seen to be equal, there would be less pressure put on the male to act a certain way or partake in particular situations like fights. Women have been trying to break out of this cycle of inferiority by trying to be their own individual person through altering the system and finally being able to put an end to patriarchy and
