The significance of a fence in this play is that it serves a dual purpose- it keeps people in and it also keeps them out, both literally and figuratively. A physical fence implies ownership. Troy wants to keep his family inside. Troy’s fence was his job. He sees the world as having a fence that white majority to keep the black majority in their place socio-economically. “The fence takes the whole play to be completed because Troy has been neglecting its construction. Therefore, you could say that the neglected fence is a symbol of Troy’s neglect of his family. The fence can also be symbolic of the things Troy wants to keep out, the things he separates himself from. The symbolism is obvious with the last dialogue we get between Troy and Cory.

Troy feels as if he can not express to Rose the same emotions he can express to Alberta. Troy builds a fence between Cory. Troy tries to fence Cory in by keeping him from pursuing his dreams because he believes that Cory will fail and wants to protect him from that. In Act two, secene one, the play expresses a conflict between Troy and his inner demons as well as a conflict between Troy and his family. Cory, his son, and Rose, his wie, have different expectations of him than he has of himself. This scene in Act two reveals some of those misunderstood expectations, and it reveals how the fence stands as a symbol for the type of love and relationships the family members value, particularly Rose, who asked Troy and Cory to build the fence. Bono was visiting Troy while Cory help build the fence. Troy tells Cory he does not understand why Rose wants a fence because they do not own valuable things.
