Feudalism is a system used in the middle ages. Feudalism and how the system works. The Middle Ages were a time of change. When the roman civilization disappeared, the modern western was just beginning. (Page 8) (Biel). The system started after the middle ages and its purpose was to find an easy system that is efficient. It splits up the people into classes. Feudalism developed an economic, military, and government system that was very effective. (page 9) (Biel). The classes are not equal, the higher the class the more power you have. Feudalism is divided into classes, the higher classes have more power. The class above knights but below the king is the lord's and lady's. The lord and lady run the farm with the knights and serfs and they pretty much control the farm. The class under the king (lords) They swear their loyalty, they get food and protection. Without lords the economy would not work, there would be no one to run the system and the whole thing would be chaos. Lord's run the land and give lower classes part of the land. The king selects a lord to run a manor and that lord gives land to lower classes like serfs for farming and barons and bailiffs for their jobs. The lords control what the classes under them do. The great chain of being. The great chain of being means god stands above all and no one is equal to god. (Bennet) You must also always follow the rule. The orthodox beliefs started getting left behind and people started believing in other things like the great chain of being. The (Bishop) and Popes are most important with the church and great chain. The (Bishop) and Popes were the highest decision makers. They ran the church and most religious beliefs. The (Bishop) and Popes also helped the king make important decisions, the pope had a close relationship with the king. That is how culture works in the middle
