Only short time after being introduced to this mysterious woman we learn that Jack meets another person who is essential and inspirational to Jacks development of self-reliance and self-perception: Tyler. Tyler, with his bright and colorful clothing and personality, in contradistinction to Marla, impersonates the devil on Jack’s shoulder. He’s organized concerning what he is doing for a living but messy when it comes to his house, intelligent on the one hand but primitive on the other hand and liberating but at the same time more restrictive than anything or anyone else in the movie. At this point in the movie, we find Jack in the middle of a constant battle of whom he should devote himself to; it is a battle of which kind of person he should become. However, even though he secretly admires Marla and is craving for her, sexually and emotionally, he decides to, to a certain degree, take over Tyler’s way of living. Throughout the movie though, we really get the impression of Jack not being able to let go of astonishing Marla and her laissez-faire behavior. This is what really appeals to Jack and what eventually makes himself get rid of Tyler and his brain-washing attempts of making him a person he strives not to be.
