Marketing is an important aspect in regard to introducing and appealing the customer to a product. Because of this, many corporations utilize this practice, and in doing so, they present their brand in countless different ways. The epitome of being unique and unorthodox is the hit comedy show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. On this show, hyperbole and absurdist humor are interwoven within the plot and the progression of each episode. Over the duration of their advertisements, they placed a strong emphasis on appealing to one’s fears. This occurred when Ronald McDonald (Mac) asserts the following statements: “Are you fat? You probably are, because you’re watching TV, or the internet!” “Us guys know that women only have one acceptable body type, skinny.” These statements “beg the question” as the entrepreneurs are assuming that men are only attracted to skinny women, they also assume that everybody that uses television or the internet is fat. Additionally, the use of subliminal imagery increases the effectiveness of this approach as the pictures provide examples of the ideal body types, which are unattainable for a majority of the population. Because of these methods, the viewer is troubled, and thus is looking for a solution to the issue. An integral part of this relationship revolves around the seller generating an interest for the product through the field of marketing. Charlie and Mac used many persuasive techniques to attract attention and profits for their company, these techniques consisted of: emotional branding, rhetorical fallacies, authoritative statements, and begging questions. These strategies allowed the business to successfully: engage the customer, gain legitimacy, create a demand, and promote positive public perception for the corporation.
