“The Odyssey” There is a man named Odysseus also referred to as King of Ithica. One day he had to be the leader he was and flee off to war, leaving his wife Penelope and newborn son Telemachus on their own as they waited for his arrival back home patiently. This story can be known as a story of a veteran because the main character, Odysseus, underwent various challenges that no normal mortal could ever survive, and he never gave up because his loyalty to his land and family was so strong. The Odyssey has figurative language in the text to help associate with the feelings of characters and that helps us understand their emotions and also helps us get more of an understanding of the text. In the text when Odysseus and Telemachus' find each other they compare their tears to a great taloned hawk being quick and fluttering. Telemachus and Odysseus finally reunite after being apart for 20 years and quickly become emotional. The text states “Telemachus began to weep. Salt tears rose from the wells of longing in both men and cries burst from both as keen and fluttering as those of a great taloned hawk.” (pg 855, line 73-76). This simile shows how emotional it was for Odysseus and Telemachus just by simply reuniting with each other by comparing their falling tears as fast as a hawk roaming in the sky. Telemachus and Odysseus appreciate each other by just simply being in each other's presence and they appreciate it so much that it causes these rapid tears to fall down. This shows how much they mean to each other, even though it has only been seconds, they take no time to waste to value each other's company.
