The Odyssey is a story about Odysseus and his journey home. The challenges that he faces, and the things he has to overcome to be back with his family. All these challenges that the gods were with him helping him to get past and endure things that he couldn 't do without the guidance. There are many interpretations of this story and many different types of interpretations. Some are movies, graphic novels, novels, short stories, prose, and many more. Picking two of those we can begin to compare and see which is better for out learning, and understanding. Comparing the Graphic Novel by Gareth Hinds, and the prose by Samuel Butler we begin to decipher the text, pictures and any other aid in understanding and find the best fit. Next, the graphic novel is easier to follow and easier to understand. If you are lost, you just quickly take a better look at the illustrations or flip back a few pages until you see that a part that you know very well, in the prose there is a lot of text and no real markers other than the paragraphing that you can take a simple look at to see if you know the section well enough to move on or if you need to take another look at it. Another reason the graphic novel interpretation of the Odyssey is easier to follow and understand is because of the fact that it tells the story in a more straight forward way. The texts tells what happens in the story with detail and the illustrations are what bring the creative aspect into play. In the prose, the text is very detailed and it can sometimes get confusing as to what is the story and what is creative. Such as, "Ulysses (Odysseus) slept in the cloister upon an undressed bullock 's hide, on the top of which he threw several skins of the sheep the suitors had eaten..." Lastly, the graphic novel interpretation is easier to understand because of the illustrations that serve many purposes. They help us to stay on track, they act as markers, and so much more. If we are not following or don 't understand then we can look back at the pictures and find things that we missed, or didn 't understand from the text. Finally, because of these pictures we can understand the story more for all of the aforementioned reasons. Because they help us engaged in the story, they help us to stay connected in in tune with the events in the story, and they help us to understand it better. Overall, the graphic novel is a better learning tool and more engaging interpretation of the Odyssey. This is because it is not as strenuous and chalk full of text, it is easier to follow along and understand, and the pictures sever many helpful
