Can you imagine being Jewish in 1935 and being killed just because of your beliefs and culture?! In the book, Maus talks about Jewishness and what the Jews did when this was going on. Also the poem “Often In a Minute” has some challenges that Jews faced, they faced Jewishness and all the hate upon them. They also had hope and that hope was towards the future because they want to survive and live and all they can think about is if their friends and family are going to be ok. In Maus, written by Art Spiegelman it said that the Jews would always be hunted and sometimes they were tricked to go somewhere and were killed. Also, Maus talks about hope for the future saying “I hope we can live through this” and this shows that they are scared for their lives and all they can do is hope for the future. In Maus, it was talking about jewishness and people that were Jewish needing to hide their families and people getting hanged on the street and in the graphic novel it says that the character Vladek saw his former friend hanged on a telephone pole on the street for the Nazis to scare the Jewish people. This also led to the future because they would all worry about friends and family and now they don't know how the future will end up. All they can do is keep hiding from the Nazis. When I was reading the graphic novel it was so much easier to read than the poem because it showed me pictures and the people that were talking and the character traits. I feel like the graphic novel was easier to read because it would talk and reflect how Jews were and it would talk about Jewishness. The pictures showed how they reacted and I could see what it was talking about. Also in the graphic novel I could see how they could hope for the future because it would show them hiding and them talking about the future with their faces looking hopeful. In the poem “Often In A Minute it was harder to understand the reading because you really had to think about what the text was saying. When I read it the themes were jewishness and hope for the future and it would talk about Jews being scared to go outside and them being stuck inside doing nothing. Jewishness was a big theme in the poem because they had to hide and be quiet and it was like a game of hide and seek but it wasn't a game if they found you they would kill you. Another huge theme in the poem was hope for the future and they would say “when it's over” as in when it's over what's next they would come up with ideas when it's all over what's next. These were some major themes in the graphic novel and the poem and they were the most
