I Couldn’t Figure Out What is Wrong With Me, So I’ve Decided to Figure Out What is Wrong With Everybody Else: Psychology
When I was five years old, I wanted to be a princess. I would research the job criteria by obsessively watching Disney movies, including Snow White, Cinderella, and my personal favorite, Ella Enchanted. When I was ten years old, I realized my royalty reveries were not ambitious enough, and I decided to be a veterinarian. I loved animals, therefore, this job was obviously my true career calling. I watched Animal Planet intensively, observing all the different types of animals intently and showing off my mastery in wildlife to my grandmother. Each career has their own educational requirements, and some careers have multiple degrees that are needed to continue this job. “According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, psychologists require a master's, specialist, or doctoral degree in psychology” (Choosing to focus on Research as a Psychologist). Obtaining a doctorate is a long process. From start to finish, this could take a minimum of twelve years of school. Therefore, having a step-by-step career plan to stay focused is vital. Research Psychology is a broad topic, but there are many interesting and exciting jobs to pick from. Occupations like cognitive psychologists, who “help us try to understand the human thought process and how we acquire, process, and store information” (What is Cognitive Psychology?) and experimental psychology, which requires psychologists to “carry out experiments on subjects, collect data, and draw conclusions from the acquired data” are only a few of the careers that are seen as exciting and educational (What is Experimental Psychology). Psychology is such a diverse field of work. There are so many jobs that will always be available in the future. I love that this work requires you to continue learning about new discoveries, and the possibilities are endless. I hope to continue to pursue a career in research psychology and make the world a better place through my
