Though many movies try to romanticize war and make it look like a happy place where there is only pride and joy for the country they are serving. In the book, Soldier Boys, by Dean Hughes two boys who are on opposite sides of the war tell their struggles and stories of battle in the War and how their two different lives collide together. The author of the book, Dean Hughes, has spent 7 years doing research on World War II and finding information about the war. Dean Hughes has interviewed war veterans, studied newspapers that were written in the time of World War II, and read hundreds of books like, “The Burden of Hitler 's Legacy” by Alfons Hecks to help his understanding of this time period and events. Movie Report: Hacksaw Ridge The movie Hacksaw Ridge takes place during World War II on the island of Okinawa against the Japanese. The bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in 1941 while under Franklin Roosevelt 's presidency by the Japanese triggered America’s involvement in World War II. Hacksaw Ridge is a historically accurate movie pertaining to the real life events of what went on between the characters, the settings and events during World War II at Hacksaw Ridge in Okinawa. Desmond Doss, who is the main character, lived with his family in Virginia: Tom Doss, his father, Bertha Doss his mother, and Harnold Doss, his brother.
All Quiet on the Western Front tells the story of Paul Baumer, a German young man who is drafted into the army with some of his high school friends. Unfortunately, he and his friends have unrealistic ideas about what they are going to face while serving. The movie shows the tragedy of war through the emotional connection characters have, and focuses on the experiences had by the newly enlisted group of friends. I both enjoyed and did not enjoy the movie All Quiet on the Western Front. The parts that I enjoyed included the detail and historical accuracy which could be lined up with the information we have been learning in class.
Throughout the career of writer and director Jim Sheridan, there has been a significant change to not only Irish-made films but those directed by Irish individuals as well. Sheridan has attempted to maintain a realistic balance of both local and global expectations of “Irish Films.” Mr. Sheridan has helped move Ireland away from the many stereotypes found in films about or even set in the country. One of the lasting films in Ireland was director John Ford’s The Quiet Man.
