Alexis Williams SSCI 104X Professor Dunlap 1 April 2018 Critique Essay “You can’t be what you can’t see” is the key message given in the movie Miss Representation. Miss Representation is a 2011 American documentary movie composed, coordinated, and created by Jennifer Siebel Newsom. It investigates how predominant press adds to the under-portrayal of women in compelling positions by circling constrained and regularly defaming depictions of women. The motion picture brought along a great deal of positive development and empowers the individuals who saw the film to take the promise against sex misconceptions by utilizing hashtags such as #RepresentHer and #DisruptTheNarrative (2018, Representation Project). The United States is 33rd out of the 49 highest income countries when it comes to women in the national legislature (2018, Representation Project). It is very unusual to see women take on leadership roles, but many women took on the task including Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton have been supported by American for over twenty-five years for taking a step into leadership. Clinton utilized media as a resource in many ways throughout her career. Media was her outlet to gain respect and show people she was capable being more than a housewife. Young women need to realize they have a role in life other than being a stereotype. Miss Representation expresses throughout the documentary how women are misrepresented. “It depends on who’s piloting the plane” said by Katie Couric in the documentary (8:24). Katie’s quote symbolizes today’s society. There will be no progress if the world is still being led by men. If men continue to lead the world women will forever be stereotyped and misrepresented. Men view of women has structured society. Throughout life women are taught to behave a certain way, dress a certain way, and carry themselves a certain way all according to the media. Television has brainwashed girls in many different ways. According to society young women are supposed to have a slim petite firm body and full in all the right areas. Women tend to live up to men expectations to feel accepted which means men will forever hold power do to their self
