American Romantic heroes are people who have been rejected by society in a way, and end up on a quest trying to fulfill something for themselves but end up doing something of a greater cause. In the movie “The Last of the Mohicans” Nathaniel is considered a romantic hero. As he sets out on this journey he displays the qualities that make him an American Romantic hero.
Nathaniel is considered a romantic hero because of his quest for some higher truth in the natural world, his sense of honor based on some higher principle, and his affiliation with nature. The first thing that makes Nathaniel a romantic hero is that he has some higher truth in the natural world. The most obvious reason for this is that he is a white man that was raised as an Indian. He grew up learning the ways of the Indians and learned that it is important to be one with the natural world. It is because of the way he grew up, that he seeks higher truth with the natural world. He has always lived within nature. Nathaniel has spent his whole life out in the woods, and has become very familiar with the area in which he is from. He uses this to his advantage many times during the movie. He is able to track people by following imprinted footsteps and broken branches for miles. In the movie he uses this skill to find Cora and her sister, after Magua and the other Huron Indians take them. He can also direct people in very specific terms because he is so familiar with the area. Because of this he is able to allow some of the men to leave the fort without being caught or killed by the Huron people out in the woods. Nature is his way of getting from place to place. He follows what he sees and remembers what he sees to get to where he needs to go. He uses his skills and love for nature to benefit not only himself but the people around
