Intro
The physical education classes of today are still based on participation and dressing out; and, at the end of the semester or grading period, the students are tested cognitively. This is very confusing, and frustrating for physical education teachers. Also, in some counties, the students know the physical education exam doesn’t even matter for them to graduate. I have even heard of teachers even losing their jobs because of these unfair requirement towards the physical education department in the school system. Even when students are taken away from an academic course and replaced with physical education, their academic scores do not change and may even improve. “More time in physical education, therefore, may help students perform better academically. Physical education should be promoted for its many benefits, and fear of negatively affecting academic achievement does not seem to be a legitimate reason for reducing or eliminating programs in physical education” (Carlson, Fulton, Lee, Maynard, Brown, Kohl, & Dietz, 2008, p.726). For these reasons physical education teachers, feel their curriculum is not as important as academic coursework. Teachers within the school system find it is totally acceptable to take their students out of physical education
