Nathan explains to Caleb that he will make pass the Turing test to Ava. This experiment proves if the robot has a real artificial intelligence (AI). The concept is about having a normal conversation with Ava without suspecting that she is not human. Caleb is impressed and considers himself lucky to participate in this experiment.
Caleb realizes that Ava is almost human in his speech, “emotions”, facial expressions, etc. But Nathan already knew that Ava had a good AI. The test is more based on convincing a human that the robot is conscious, has a “conscience”. Even if Ava can pretty well fake emotions, she was programmed to trick Caleb, and succeeds in her mission. The problem is she can see further than Nathan had planned. Indeed, she was supposed

When Caleb discovers he tore Ava’s drawing, he begins to think that Nathan is excessive. Since then, he wants to escape with Ava, and sees Nathan as a monster.
When Nathan tears Ava’s drawing of Caleb, it is a big scenario to reach Caleb’s sensibility. Ava doesn’t really like Caleb, and Nathan either. She just applies the rules since she is enclosed. However, she uses her intelligence to seduce Caleb and to trick Nathan after. Even if she doesn’t have a real “conscience” she can manage to “feel” the way she should, and acts good. Because she is a robot, she is aware of all the dangers and possibilities of situation in this bunker, and already planned to escape

This action makes Kyoko a determining character in the story, because she seems to obey to Nathan: she can’t talk and has almost no facial expression. That makes her a “slave” domestic and sexual, and that is precisely the wrong thing about Nathan. We can better understand that she communicates with Ava to kill him, after all he has done to her. It’s true she is a robot, but a robot can alsso be respected.
When Caleb arrives, Nathan says he has an hangover. Nathan is frequently drunk, making him in a bad condition. He often sleeps and seems a little lost. Their relation is a bit awkward relation, because Caleb doesn’t drink too much.
Clearly, Nathan drinks because he is sad to be alone in that bunker. Even if he seems okay, he can’t be happy with his robots. When he drinks, Nathan fells better, but also frees his mind. When he explains to Caleb that if Pollock decided not to draw anything without knowing exactly what he was doing, he never would have made a single mark, we can say that it is his motto. By being drunk, he is more creative and can think differently for the AI’s design.
At the end, Nathan knocks down Caleb because Caleb tricked the security system to open all the doors during the power cuts. He had figured out that maybe he could be heard when discussing with Ava. That makes Nathan angry, and he wants to shut off Kyoko and
