Ex Machina explores many ideas on the negativities of technology. It exposes the true view of our world today. To get a brief idea, the world around us is using technology for everything. Without technology, the world wouldn’t be what it is today; it’s used for communication, public service, houses and almost anything that exists today.
The movie allows the audience to see how much we rely on technology; from the google-like web company, to the droid programmed with Artificial Intelligence. With this, the text is able to show the negative consequence of advanced technology. An example of this is BlueBook (the google-like company) collecting tonnes of information from users through its web search history and even cameras on the phone. Caleb is presented as a young and naïve programmer, who is easily seduced by an AI droid. Ava is shown as an innocent and calm robot that has a human nature as she’s programmed with Artificial Intelligence. She is mostly shown as the victim in the film and the audience are made to sympathise her due to their connection to the innocent robot. Nathan is the CEO of BlueBook and is Caleb’s boss. He is portrayed as the villain of the movie due to his harsh and secretive personality. The audience are leaned to loathe him for the list of lies he told for his own achievement; selfishness. Characterisation plays a major role in Ex Machina as it changes the audience’s view on a specific matter; for example, audience have the choice to trust Nathan or not after Ava’s warning. Since Ava is characterised as an innocent being, the major part of the audience will believe her. However, she is revealed to betray Caleb and turned out to be the villain in disguise the whole
