Ever since I was born I have been brought up in a Christian home. As I have gotten older, I have upheld the Christian belief and am a follower of Jesus. I strive to see the world the way God sees it, as well as the people in it. I do my best to love people and allow Christ to use me for his glory. Christianity is my belief system, and I strive to see the world as Christ does. The three works that had the most impact on me as a person spiritually, emotionally, and critically would be Pascal’s Pensées, “The Tables Turned an Evening Scene on the Same Subject” by William Wordsworth, and “Love (III)” by George Herbert because all three works challenged the way I think and also inspired me. As he states in the fourth stanza, “And hark! How blithe the throstle sings! / He, too, is no mean preacher: / Come forth into the light of things, / Let Nature be your teacher.” This furthers my question to if something had happened to him in the past by bringing up “He, too, is no mean preacher.” Also, to capitalize the word “nature” shows how much he looked to it with reverence. Later on in the sixth stanza he says, “One impulse from a vernal wood / May teach you more of man, / Of moral evil and of good, / Than all the sages can.” We can see that his conceptual framework was completely structured to nature teaching us morals and wisdom. He looked to nature as though it were a god. This mindset of looking to nature really challenged everything I stand for. Not in the sense that I could possibly believe it, but it did challenge me to wonder why they think this. From this poem I can see that nature is a foundation to what Mr. Wordsworth believes. In some ways I can see why he points to nature as the source of wisdom, because society does produce some negatives, but you can’t say it is not beneficial in ways as well. To challenge Mr. Wordsworth, I would say that just as man has negatives that he points out in his poem, nature does also. Nature is not perfect, neither is man.
