Emily Dickinson is said to be one of the greatest poets in American history. She developed her own style of writing that people of her time didn’t know what to distinguish it as. Emily’s poems were always very short and consisted of simple words that held great meaning. Although, some of her poems weren’t always so clear. Often, she allowed the readers to distinguish their own message from her poems. The poems Emily left behind gave us an insight on how she viewed some of the things in her life; such as, human understanding. Emily Dickinson gave the impression that human understanding is something boundless or unlimited, in other poems she presented it as something limited, and wrote many poems providing her view of the individual self.

In the first stanza of this poem it reads, “The Soul selects her own Society- Then- shuts the Door- To her divine Majority- Present no more-” the basic message in these few lines is that she only allows a few people into her life and into her mind and shuts the rest out. Even the first line explains that the soul selects the few people she wants to associate her life with and is reclusive towards everyone else. Another one of her poems titled, “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” shares this same idea. The first stanza reads, “I’m Nobody! Who are you? Are you- Nobody- too? Then theres a pair of us! Don’t tell! They’d advertise- you know!” This poem explains the exclusion she has from society, showing how human understanding is small and limited.
