Winston is the protagonist of the novel. The story is told through his thoughts and feelings by third person limited point of view. He is 39 years old, but he is unsure if his age is true. His job is in the Ministry of Truth, and he alters documents to make the Party always seem correct and perfect. Even though he works for the Party, he is an unimportant member. Winston has a vision that an important member of the Party, O’Brien, is secretly against the government. He had a dream that O’Brien spoke to him saying they will meet in “the place where there is no darkness”. Also, when their eyes meet during the Two Minutes Hate, Winston sees hatred in O’Brien’s eyes. Throughout the novel, Winston wonders if O’Brien is a friend or enemy. When he sees her fall down, he helps her, and she gives him a note saying I love you. After he reads the note, his view changes because “at the sight of the words I love you the desire to stay alive had welled up in him, and the taking of minor risks suddenly seemed stupid”(109). His love for the girl, Julia, gives him the need to stay alive throughout the novel. When Julia and Winston meet up, his life changes. All he does is think about her and the next time he can see her. When a prole shop owner, Mr.Charrington, offers him a private room, he accepts it so him and Julia can be together. They are both breaking the Party’s rules and could be killed.
