The Party’s control of information distributed to the populace goes in hand with The Party’s manipulation toward all the people in Oceania. Assigning different mysteries in charge of specific activities which do the exact opposite of what their name says. For example;The Ministry of Love tortures political prisoners,The Ministry of Peace purses war,The Ministry of Plenty rations the food supply to keep people near starvation, and The Ministry of Truth where Winston works spreads propaganda along with censoring all print media and revising history. Along with minister, The Party surrounds the people with inducements to ensure control of their independent thoughts and devotion toward The Party. The change of information, heavy surveillance on everyone, propaganda; all of that is apart of the daily lives in Oceania. However, Winston keeps a journal of everything that happens in the past even though The Party gets rid of all records. Winston is aware of these changes but he still goes along with it all. An example of this would be in Book 2, “A mighty deed, which could never be mentioned, had been achieved. It was now impossible for any human being to prove by documentary evidence that the war with Eurasia had ever happened. ” Winston’s duties consist of editing and rewriting history with respect to the announcement of Oceania’s new enemy. Wiston is not bothered by his lying in furtherance of The Party’s goals, but is genuinely proud of taking part in society. This furthers the power of manipulation that The Party has because it convinces Winston that he was doing a good deed rather than promoting lies to the people.
