The book Fit to be Tied: Making Marriage Last a Lifetime by Bill and Lynne Hybels discusses the different aspects of marriage and dating, from the high points to the lowest points. The authors use biblical principals, as well as advice from their own marriage in the areas of difficulty and hardships that can happen in relationships, whether married or even in the dating phase of life. The book covers a wide variety of subjects under two main points, starting with the process towards marriage, being dating and courtship, to making a marriage. Though there may be character traits that one may find attractive in a potential spouse, they must consider if they will be able to live with those traits for a lifetime as well as learning the different character traits of the potential spouse. Part two of the book focusses on how to make a marriage last. Explaining family backgrounds is the first chapter in this part of the book. Basically, get to know the family background of the person you are interested in pursuing for a spouse. It will help you learn way more about the family and the character of your potential spouse. Plus, it is definitely beneficial to be on good terms with the family. As my mom puts it so nicely, “you don’t just marry the person, you marry the family as well.” The next two chapters deal with conflict in the relationship and how to resolve it as well as learning how each other handles tension in the relationship. This can be crucial as strife in the marriage relationship can rip apart the marriage slowly over time if left unresolved. The final few chapters of the book give advice on how to reignite the flame of romance in a marriage should a dry period arise. Not just in the sex area, but also through subtle gestures of kindness, discovering new things about the other person and even doing new activities together. Overall, communicate, learn new things about each other, and give the marriage over to God
