In Christian law, marriage is a sacred institution and according to the bible, marriage is forever. The only reason that a couple would be able to divorce is written in Matthew 5:32 and 19:9 “except for marital unfaithfulness”. This relates back to one of God’s 10 commandments, ‘Thou shall not commit adultery’. In the old testament, God laid down some laws in order to protect the divorcees, especially the women. This is seen by many as God way of making sure women are protected, even if their betrothed is unfaithful. Through these laws, there are some exceptions as to when a couple is allowed to divorce. Above is a photo which shows which of the main religious groups support abortions. An example of a church that does not allow abortions is the Roman Catholic Church. They oppose abortions under any circumstance. Although there are churches who see abortions as a sin, there are others, such as the uniting church who allow women to have abortions, with few or no exceptions. There are also denominations that feel that abortions should only be used in extreme cases, such as a risk to the mother, and then denominations who see to have no clear position on this matter.

Is contraception allowed within the church?
Most protestant churches see the use of contraception within marriage as a responsible way of planning a family. For example, the Lutheran Church. According to the Lutheran Church of Australia, having children is not the only reason a married couple should have sexual intercourse (Lutheran Church, 2017). They read the bible to say that there are three different purposes to sexual intercourse, these include, providing mutual help and encouragement, having children and to avoid sexual immortality. What are they key elements of a Christian marriage?
Christians believe that marriage is a gift from God. For Christians, getting married in a church, before God is very important (BBC, 2017).
Before a wedding ceremony, there are several things a couple must do. Firstly, they must arrange to have their ‘banns’. This is a public announcement of their engagement. This must be read out on the three Sunday’s during the three months leading up to the wedding.
Secondly, the couple must speak to the priest about the hymns and prayers that they would like on their wedding day. Couples are allowed to include extra touches such as musicians or flower arrangements. Some churches also offer marriage preparation. This is where a priest will discuss with couple’s subjects such as money, conflict and sex. So that fi couples come across problems related to this in their marriage they will have help and ideas on how to manage them.
On the day of their marriage, the order is as follows:
The beginning of the service, declarations, vows, rings, proclamation, prayers, readings and sermon and signing the register.
