The Man, The Myth, The Legend, Jay Gatsby Many times seasons are associated with human life and functions within different literary contents. There are numerous scenarios that symbolize seasons throughout the book The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. These seasonal changes can alter the characters’ behaviors and lead to problematic situations. The differences within the seasons results in drastic alterations within character psychology and executions. The usage of seasons adds to the complexity of the various book plots. Summer is a time to be free and let go of stress. In the summers of the 1920’s, people often had many different options of what to do. They enjoyed different types of dancing such as the Foxtrot or the Tango. People liked the idea of not having to worry about work or other things in life that stressed them out, they just acted/behaved the way they desired. On the other hand, The Great Gatsby presents summer as having a completely different meaning. This is when the chaos and disorder of summer comes into play in the book. The chapters that precede the climax of the story are all leading up to chapter seven. In chapter seven, the chapter starts off by claiming that this day is the hottest day of the year. In this chapter, weather is one of the main factors contributing to the plot of the story. Summer tends to get people fired up. Gatsby, Nick, Tom, Daisy and Jordan all decide to go into town together when things begin to heat up. Gatsby finally has a chance to say what has been on his mind for the entire story in front of Daisy, Tom, Nick and Jordan. He claims to Tom that Daisy never loved him and how she had always loved Gatsby all along. Tom then begins to act as the innocent one of the group, by bringing up old memories he has with Daisy asking her if she had loved him then. People do not associate death with autumn, people often connect autumn to the gilded age, where it is a beautiful time but death is still present. An example would be when the leaves are falling from the trees. People judge the leaves on how beautiful they are when in reality the leaves are really just dying. Autumn represents a beautiful death. Instead of dying with a feeling of sorrow or regret, it’s almost like you feel a sense of pride, hence the phrase “beautiful death”. In The Great Gatsby towards the end of the book, Tom and Daisy are still in a fight and Gatsby is expecting a call from Daisy announcing that she wants to run away with Gatsby forever. After the horrific act of killing Myrtle committed by Daisy, Tom is furious. Wilson is so overcome by grief and anguish that he is willing to do anything to avenge Myrtle’s death. The next day Gatsby invites Nick over for one last time. He is exuding confidence because he knows that daisy will call. He then proceeds to ask Nick if he would like to stay for a little swim but Nick says that he has work to do. Nick states, “We shook hands and I started away. Just before I reached the hedge I remembered something and turned
