The 1920s were a time of great change in the United States. World War I had just ended and everyone was joyous that it was over. New jobs were created and styles changed to fit these new times. It was during this period that the flapper came about. The flapper’s unfamiliar style shocked those of the older generation.

The flapper look was very different than what the women previously of the 1920s wore. Physically the women had bobbed hair, noticeable makeup, and flashy lipstick.
The ideal image of women was one of the chief changes that occurred during the 1920s. The extreme lifestyle occurrence allowed the new developing concept of the new woman to diffuse across America. Throughout the 1920s women tested the gender standards set for them. The women that challenged the standard mindset of women the most were known as flappers. Flappers wore short dresses, wore short hairstyles, and also smoke, drank, and spoke their minds.
Just a few years earlier, a properly attired lady wore a dress that hugged her neck and flowed down to her ankles. During the twenties, necklines plunged and hemlines rose to reveal a woman’s knees. Women who dressed in such a shocking manner were called “flappers”. Another example of social changes in the 1920’s is the change from slow classical music to fast-paced jazz music. Perhaps the most lasting art form to emerge in the Roaring Twenties was the uniquely American style of music known as jazz.
