The 1920s was a time when people broke out of the society’s traditional roles. Women used to stay home and take care of their children. Now women had more freedoms and did things that they were never allowed to do before. Women were now allowed to divorce their husbands if they wanted to. They smoked, danced and drank. They wanted to enjoy their youth, which is why they cut their hair and wore makeup. In thoroughly modern Millie, Millie noticed the difference between the way that she dressed and the people in New York dressed. She felt insecure and changed her look to match the way that the people in New York dressed. She wore jewelry specifically pearls around her neck. She cut her hair and shortened the length of her dress.
