Introduction
Florence Nightingale pioneered professionalization of modern nursing in the United Kingdom in the late 19 century. Since then, the nursing practice has undergone numerous changes. Correspondingly, the Royal College Nursing (RCN), which was first started in 1916, has also undergone drastic changes to what is being witnessed today. Even though the original idea of Florence Nightingale of compassion has been maintained, the 6Cs are paramount to RCN members in contemporary practice. Incidentally, communication is classified as the process of exchanging information between two or more parties. While utilizing the listening and attending aspect of communication, nurses are expected to assess and analyze health status of a person using the details provided during the first contact. While utilizing the factors outlined, nurses are supposed to make an assessment or align the signs and symptoms of the patient with disease or disorder. If the nurse does not listen and observe the patient carefully, there are high chances some features of the patient's health will be left out when classifying the signs and symptoms. Furthermore, advanced diagnosis practices are based on the information gathered at the first contact. For that reason, incomplete recording of patient's information leads to misdiagnosis, inadequate therapeutic strategies and prolonging the treatment process (Darley 2002).
