Florence Nightingale and Catherine McCauley are inspirational figures that many people look up to, even to this day. Nightingale and McCauley both have had a strong impact on individuals lives by nursing them back to health. Their work primarily focused on physically healing those who were injured, as well as maintaining their mental health by providing emotional support. Besides both being female, these powerful women share other similarities such as assisting the poor, being leaders, recruiting other health professionals, putting themselves in danger just to save others, and allowing their loved ones fulfill their dreams. Nursing is an occupation meant for those who are willing to dedicate their time to helping others and keeping them healthy. Nightingale and McAuley are two of the many that decided to take action to make a lasting imprint on history. During their era, having confident female leaders was difficult to find; however, McAuley and Nightingale would never take “no” for an answer. Markel (2017) stated, “Catherine knew that to be a real help to the poor, she would have to see the reality of the struggle they faced everyday…she vows to service the poor” (p. 1). Not only did Catherine want to assist the poor, she also constructed a living space where individuals who need medical attention can stay.
