It has been said, Family is not an important thing, It is everything. This is seen in the historical fiction novel, The Watsons Go To Birmingham, 1963, by Christopher Paul Curtis when Kenny learns about the importance of appreciating his family. During the road trip, Kenny gets to spend time with his loved ones and learn more about them, though he doesn’t always know it. The author uses symbolism to convey the message, Appreciate your family.
In the novella, Steinbeck paints a vivid picture of an Edenic setting, emphasizing its lushness and serenity. This imagery serves as a stark contrast to the harsh realities of the outside world and symbolizes a temporary escape for George and Lennie. However, the movie adaptation fails to accurately represent this paradise-like environment. Instead of the vibrant and captivating Edenic garden described in the novella, the movie portrays a mere pond surrounded by brush. This omission undermines the significance of the setting and diminishes the emotional impact of the final scene.
By using the words “fringe” and “flowering,” the reader is easily able to visualize the negative trend of the inner city. Steinbeck uses the word “flowering” to create the image in the reader’s mind that at one point businesses in the area were doing well, and were certainly making profits, as flowers have a positive connotation. On the other hand,
Flowers for Algernon When there is a book that has a movie adaptation usually there is differences between the two. In Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes there were a lot of differences between the book and the movie. There were many differences between the two like Charlie’s relationships, the date it takes place, where he works, and absence of characters. One thing I noticed in the movie that was different in the book is where Charlie works.
After reading the novel and watching the movie “Of Mice and Men”, I have learned about the lifestyle of migrant workers in California during the 1930s, which I did not know about before studying the novel. California back in the 1930s is very different from what I pictured it to be as the conditions of life weren’t that good. This is also the first novel that I have read in my years as a student that contains so much foreshadowing. Never before had I read a book where the author produced so much foreshadowing in such a short book. Steinbeck uses Lennie as a source of motivation and hope in achieving the dream farm that George, Candy, Crooks and Lennie himself desire.
In the story of “Marigolds” the theme is you have to learn from your childhood mistakes. The story “Marigolds” is about how her hometown is filled with dirt roads and it’s very boring. It was this black lady named Miss Lottie that lived in Lizabeth neighborhood who loved her sunflowers. Miss Lottie loved her yellow brownish sunflowers that was planted in her big brown dry dirt yard, she watered the beautiful sunflowers everyday. The children use to always bully Miss Lottie and make fun of her by throwing rocks at her and calling her a name.
“Blood makes you related, loyalty makes you family”-Unknown. This quote relates directly to my story “Barn Burning” by William Faulkner. Barn Burning is a story of family, loyalty, and morality and answers the question “how far does loyalty to family go?”. This story follows a boy named Sarty that is at the age where he starting to figure out what kind of person he will be in life. Sarty is a fascinating and dynamic young boy that faces a major ethical dilemma.

Me and Lennie were real happy there, cos we could go over to the town on Sunday and sit on the street and watch life go by. Ye, we had a hellu’ve good life up in Weed.” George paused and before he continued. “So we was sittin’ in the gutter one day in a quiet place of the town and Lennie sees a girl come by, really purty girl with a pink beautiful dress, ya know the color of dem real fancy cakes the baker makes for those rich folks. And there’s two things Lennie jus’ loves - bright colors and soft things, so when
Salinas was known to be a thriving farming community. The little towns and small ranches in the hills heavily inspired Steinbeck’s writing. Through his novels, he hopes that other individuals would see it as, “... the valley of the world” (“John Steinbeck Biography”). The beauty that Steinbeck sees within Salinas is what drives him to include much of its surroundings into his
This new found hope gave her reason and happiness in the world that she was introduced to after the incident. The event that occurred on that summer night may have been scarring, however it granted Lizabeth the ability to see that the future was not going to be all that bad. These marigolds changed Lizabeth’s perspective on growing up and made her sanguine of a better
Through her use of symbolism the author shows how much the marigolds mean to Miss Lottie. Through her use of point of view readers have a clear view of the look and atmosphere of the old town and the how the marigolds were the only beautiful thing
The love of a family is life’s greatest blessing. In life, there is a universal desire for oneness among people—we want to belong. It is why we collaborate, support common causes, cheer for sports teams, feel nationalism; it’s why we build villages, towns, and cities. Families are where we connect ourselves in relationships to past, current, and future generations. For many, family is not only a blessing, but our greatest accomplishment.
Through all the tough and terrible situations a person may be wrapped up in your family is usually the group of people you can go to, and get the best most helpful advice. In my family I have certain people that I can automatically go to and tell them my problems without being judged, and I always get the best advice. People in your family are the people you keep closest to you because they are blood, and they’re not friends that come and go. They are blood and will always be apart of you and want nothing but the best for you. People in a family that give the best advice are the ones who have gone through so many battles in their life because they know what it takes to overcome them.
