Mortal coils is a fantasy novel by Eric Nylund that deals with the hardships you must deal with in life, and fighting for what you believe is right. Twin Siblings Eliot and Fiona must pass three heroic trails to find out which side of the family they belong to, and while doing so try to stay alive. Together they learn that their love for one another and the rest of their family will be the one thing that saves their lives. With this, they also realize that love is shown in ways that isn 't in fairy-tales, such as deceit and murder. This novel is one that hits you right in the heart almost instantly, with you learning that Eliot and Fiona have no mother, or father, so they must live with their super-strict grandmother and kind, but overbearing, great-grandmother. The twins have an average sibling relationship, which means that they fight quite often, but not physically. They fight using words and logic, since that is all they 've ever known. However, for as much as they do play these games of logic, they do show compassion for one another, and their great-grandmother Cee even tells them to "Be brave," and "Do not let them separate you. It shows that people can be transformed into something that they never even believed was true before they saw it with their own eyes-or felt it with their own hearts. Fiona and Eliot learn that unfortunately, the real world isn 't the same as a fairy tale. You must fight for what you love, and do things you never thought you could do before. You must lie and deceive those around you to protect the people you care the most about.
