A symbol is something used to represent ideas or concepts. One of the symbols in Winterdance is the dogs. The dogs in the book symbolize Gary’s love for running in the snow and exploring nature. In the book he even states how he feels like a family member of the dogs.
“The ability to observe without evaluating is the highest form of intelligence.” The great author, J. Krishnamurti said this quote. And this idea is exactly what the community in the book, “Flowers for Algernon,” written by Daniel Keyes needs to learn. An avid sci-fi story, this book leads us through the rendezvous of the main character Charlie Gordon, while becoming accompanied by a timid mouse, Algernon. Before, Charlie is considered the runt of the pack, an inefficient and clueless person, constantly wandering around.
The second symbol is the rose. The rose symbolizes Miss Strangeworth’s protection. She had belief that the roses were keeping her protected from the evil that was and that continues in the town. She believes that while she is putting evil in they will keep it

In the short story “The Possibility of Evil” by Shirley Jackson uses several symbols to tell her story about Miss Strangeworth. One symbol Shirley uses in the short story is Miss Strangeworth’s roses. She devotes herself to the roses more than anything and will take care of them, letting no one take any and keeping them beautiful. They endure more meaning than just plain flowers, they consist of memories, they hold a place ever since Miss Strangeworth’s grandfather built the house she currently lives in. The roses persisted of the care by Miss Strangeworth’s grandmother, mother, and now by her.

There is an important theme in the story Flowers for Algernon By Daniel Keyes. It is a fiction novel about a thirty year old man who has been battling to overcome an intellectual deficit all of his life and has an opportunity to become more intelligent than he ever had imagined through an experimental operation. He takes the opportunity and in a few weeks he becomes a genius for a short time before his itelligence receded as fast as it increased. The author includes many important themes throughout the passage. Daniel Keyes develops the theme that intelligence doesn’t affect who you truly are through Charlie’s experiences both before and after the operation.
She uses symbolism to express how Miss Strangeworth compares the people like her roses but treats them differently in a cruel way. For example, on page 1,“Miss Strangeworth never gave away any of her roses, although the tourists often asked her. The roses belonged on Pleasant Street, and it bothered Miss Strangeworth to think of people wanting to carry them away, to take them into strange towns and down strange streets.” In other words The roses are the symbol that represents the story.
As Janie transitions into womanhood, she gains independence from abusive relationships, and she realizes being loved the proper way is everything. Symbolic representations are used throughout the novel to convey these messages. Two of the symbols that were brought up a lot in the book are the horizon and the gloaming pear tree. The horizon symbolizes Janie's struggle to find herself. The pear tree represents Janie's youth and desire for love in Hurston's novel.
In the short story “The Chrysanthemums” written by John Steinbeck, the flowers are symbolizing more than the eye may catch. The author displays how important these chrysanthemums are to Elisa Allen, but there is a deeper meaning to the flowers than just the love she has for them. The chrysanthemums represented more than just a passion and more than just her strength, but also her dignity. When they were thrown out on the side of the road, they symbolized her dignity which was now gone since the man she trusted them with had abandoned them and her husband she catered to lacked affection for her, because through their lenses she will never be enough.
Another example of symbolism is shown when author William J. Brondell states “She reassures him that she also wants him to have custody of Honoria,and she praises him for his restoration” (Brondell 24). This symbolizes Honoria and hope because it shows that she too believes that Charlie honestly wants to change in order to become a better father. It also shows Charlie’s determination to change for the better and give up his old life up for a chance at a new one, as well as a chance to be a better
Symbols are used all throughout the book to add depth to the story. One example of this would be how the children all receive different things as they get older, and how each item has something to represent. A quote that shows this is “females lost their braids at Ten, and males, too, relinquished their long childish hair and took on the more manly short style which exposed their ears” (p. 46) A second symbol in the book is Jonas seeing the color red which is a very “Emotionally intense color” and symbolizes the arrival in conflicting emotions in Jonas. Penny and Primrose were never married and the experiences they faced as children were never seemed to overcome. The three largest symbols that appear in the story are Alys the young girl, penny and primrose, the forest, and of course, the thing in the forest. Byatt uses Alys as the symbol of innocence as a young child. For Penny and Primrose, she was a symbol of guilt for the rest of their lives. The forest itself is representative of a war as a powerful, and destructive force in the lives of those surrounding it, “Penny looked into the thick of the forest.
The novel Flowers for Algernon written by Daniel Keyes effectively explores the complex human experiences of disability and the impact that it has on individuals and society through its three major themes; Self-realisation , Alienation and loneliness and treatment of the mentally disabled by society. Through these themes this response will highlight the difficulties experienced by people with disabilities and the people in their lives. The first theme in Flowers for Algernon is self-realisation. Charlie’s new found knowledge has allowed him to have the ability to voice his needs and wants for understanding, acceptance, and love.
Throughout the story, there are symbols that significantly expressed the setting and the primary characters involved. Examples of the symbols could include: a heart as it represents Mrs. Mallard’s heart condition as well as her variant emotions; the window, whether it be opened or closed, could represent Mrs. Mallard’s freedom and life in a sense that she wanted to pass before she found new hope through the observance of the sky, and lastly, the chair which could represent Mrs. Mallard’s freedom and newfound independence after being oppressed within her relationship and society’s expectations of women in that period of time.
