Foil is two characters who are nothing alike with different qualities. Foil helps bring different types of characters together.
In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare use many foils to give contrast throughout the play. A foil is a comparation between two unlike characters in a play. The characters that caught my attention the most was the foil of Benvolio and Tybalt. They reveal their contrast between their emotions, roles in the play, and as protagonists and antagonists in the story. Therefore, Tybalt and Benvolio represent a classic example of foils in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.
Shakespeare uses foils to illustrate parallels and disparities certain qualities in characters. In Romeo and Juliet he created four foils, there was Tybalt and Benvolio, Romeo and Mercutio, the nurse and Lady Capulet, and finally Tybalt and Lord Capulet. Each of these characters contrast others in their own genuine way, these alterations made systematic qualities more extravagant than most generally are. The most attention-grabbing and hysterical foil that Shakespeare used was Lady Capulet and the nurse, as the nurse made more juvenile jokes Lady Capulet contracted a more grave attitude. Lady Capulet is a woman of dignity.
He was also loyal and devoted to his friends, the Montagues, Romeo and Benvolio. His death was the reason Romeo killed Tybalt out of revenge for the murder of his best friend. His death was his own fault because of his friendship with Romeo and getting in the middle of the feud. Mercutio very opinionated and had a strong characteristics that ended in his untimely demise.

In William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet there are several of these opposites, more commonly known in literature as “foil characters”. The two families, the Capulets and the Montagues, they differ from just how do not like each other, and on how they battle most of the time. These fights usually happen from one person getting mad at a person from a different family, some might fight from one liking a person and the person might have person that wants to be with them but they are not letting that happen.
While Romeo is single-mindedly focused on love, Tybalt is more focused on pride. When Romeo first meets Juliet he completely disregards their family fued and states, “I take thee at thy word. Call me but love, and I’ll be new baptized; Henceforth I never will be Romeo.” (II, ii, 49-51) Romeo is completely giving up his pride, his family name, and surrendering so he can love Juliet. Tybalt highlights this by disregarding anything that comes in the way of
Some say that opposites attract; in some cases they do and in some they do not. A foil is a character who is opposite of another character in order to highlight certain characteristics in both characters. An example of foils in a play that Shakespeare wrote, Romeo and Juliet, including rambunctious Tybalt and the tranquil Benvolio. Another example is the obnoxious funny Mercutio and the lovey dovey Romeo. Romeo and Juliet was a Shakespearean play written 1595 by William Shakespeare.
The love Mercutio has for Romeo makes him want to fight Tybalt, which leads to Tybalt stabbing him and his death. Love destroys by making Mercutio fight for Romeo. Additionally this can also be seen with Juliet killing herself when she sees Romeo

These two characters are the complete opposite, and bring out the best and the worst of each other. Mercutio often makes fun of Romeo for falling in love so easily. When Romeo describes his love for Rosaline, Mercutio laughs and says “if love be rough with you, be rough with love; prick love for pricking you, and you best love down”(1.4.27-28).
In the play The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, William Shakespeare uses foils, dramatic irony, and suspense is used to take the audience on an emotional roller coasters about love and life. Shakespeare uses foils to bring out how Romeo and Juliet are different from average teenagers which in the end contributes to the falling action tremendously. Suspense is used to keep the audience guessing and it also add to dramatic irony. Overall, Shakespeare applies all three of these literary devices to keep the audience intrigued, foil being the first one being discussed.
In this essay, I'll discuss the foil characters Capulet and Friar Lawrence from Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. Foil characters are two characters that contrast one another. Friar Lawrence and Capulet are both characters in this play that foil each other. Friar Lawrence is not a part of the Montague household or the Capulet household, he serves as a priest/doctor. Capulet is the head of the Capulet household as well as Juliet's father.
