At first the Latin American nations saw this as favorable, because they saw that the U.S. could not do anything alone if moving along without the backing of Britain. The military and political power allowed the Monroe Doctrine to be brought about. This doctrine had combined with much of the ideas of Manifest Destiny. Theodore Roosevelt’s Corollary was a great extension of this doctrine, it upturned the original meaning and justified independent intervention of the U.S. in Latin America.
Toward the end of the nineteenth century and early twentieth century, the United States was becoming an increasingly powerful nation and world power. The country was competing with other nations also expanding. Their motives for expanding were to gain land and resources. While there was a slight departure from past expansionism, the United States mostly continued as it had been in the previous years. In order to accomplish expansionism, the United States needed to acquire foreign territories to increase their global presence.
Imperialism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries was a time that refers to expansions. Expansions would be put towards military, political, and economic influences in a time where it was much needed. The United States’ actions of imperialism began to allow the United States to control other nations and territories, especially with the use of foreign policy. The American occupation of the Dominican Republic was guided by foreign policy, as seen within the country being driven by the Roosevelt Corollary, the modernization of the country for American benefit, and failed diplomacy which led to greater oppression of the Dominican people. European countries and the United States were always against each other throughout the times of imperialism.
Teddy Roosevelt, an imperialist, condemned anyone who was against the takeover of the Philippines (doc5). Before becoming a president teddy Roosevelt saw the United States as a parent to the philippines. After becoming a president Roosevelt felt that the United States needs to be an international police. He recommended his ‘big stick’ policy. This included the Roosevelt corollary as suppose to the Monroe doctrine.
This means that America thought of itself as the greatest power, therefore pushing this power onto other countries. Roosevelt also has a sense of moral imperialism and pushed the boundaries of the federal government when he added onto the Monroe Doctrine the Roosevelt Corollary. The Roosevelt Corollary not only maintained the prohibition of European colonization of Latin American countries, but also stated that the United States had the power to intervene in those countries’ affairs in order to preserve democracy and order. A vast majority of the history of the United States was marked by an age of expansionism. This era was particularly pronounced throughout the 19th century; such events may include the acquisition of Cuba, Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and the annexation of Hawaii and purchase of Alaska, all of which are the hallmarks of U.S expansionism. The main motives were of a multitude and varied, but there is one particularly strong motivation in this conquest. The acquisition of economic opportunities was a common belief among many of the people of the U.S. and among its leaders. This idea fueled and garnered this idea of expansionism and directed the course of history in its conquest.

In the 1920’s, historians have considered the United States to be an isolationist country. Presidential candidate Warren G. Harding said that he opposed the League because it does not correspond with our constitution, even saying it would be a “deadly blow at our constitutional integrity”

Practically, Roosevelt was an ardent supporter of imperialism and wanted America to play integral role in world affairs and politics. This speech also depicts his policy of interventionism and imperialism. Roosevelt defends American imperialism by taking America’s national interests into consideration. However, his imperialist approach in foreign policies raises many questions for the audience sitting outside the borders of America.
After the Civil War, the United States had begun to prosper because of this second industrial revolution. In 1803, the United States of America had bought the Louisiana Territory, it was bought from France which had made the country two times larger. In 1819 Spain had given up their territory of Florida to the United States. President Monroe issued the “Monroe Doctrine” in 1823, its main purpose was to warn the European countries to not enter the Western Hemisphere. In order for America to achieve its goal of becoming an imperialist nation they had conquered other countries economically, culturally, and with a strong military in the late 1800’s.
