U: The “U” represents an image of Theodore Roosevelt carrying two big sticks. The image represents his saying “speak softly and carry a big stick.” This means that at first, you must try to negotiate with other countries or people, but if they revolt of still say no, you “carry a big stick” or have a backup such as a strong sea Navy or many weapons. This saying helped the United States accomplish many things, such as helping Panama secede from Columbia, leading to the construction of the Panama Canal, or when he negotiated with Japan during the Russo-Japanese War. Although this mostly deals with events happening outside of the U.S., it still is in favor of the U.S., because Roosevelt believed that America should not stay in it’s own area, but go world-wide in power, and that is what he was doing. …show more content…

The reason he had something to do with this, is because of his helping with Panama seceding from Columbia. At first, he was deciding whether to go through a strip of land in Panama or in Nicaragua. The Senate finally agreed with the strip of land in Panama, and Theodore started to negotiate with Columbia, since Columbia owned it. When Columbia rejected this proposal, Theodore went to a backup plan, helping Panama revolt from Columbia. Eventually, the building commenced. When the construction was over, many ships were able to save time and resources by going through the canal, instead of going around South America. The construction also advanced the U.S. technology and engineering skills. This helped America because it helped with their skills and it saved time and money when traveling from the West of South America to the East and vice
