Filkins wrote the book to show the world his time in Iraq during the invasion and the years after. The book is written chronologically from the first-person point of view of Filkins's personal experiences. The book takes place in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq and ends in 2009 after his return to the United States. The Forever War is an autobiography about Filkin's experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq. The book is about Dexter Filkin, a war reporter born in the United States, and his first-hand accounts of the Iraq war and the invasion of Iraq in 2003. The …show more content…

Pg. 208. -. Moments later the first Marine Miller went up and was shot and they ended up having to blow up the minaret. It was a very surreal and sad experience because it showed that death can take anyone at any time. The book is dedicated to Miller for what he did. An important part of the book is dedicated to Filkins's time with Colonel Sassaman, one of the most important American generals in Iraq at the time. Sassaman went from being someone who tried to help the people when he got there to being someone who cared very little and was much less friendly at the end of their time together. An important part of this section was when Filkens learned about Sassaman’s “nonlethal punishments” on Iraqi men suspected of crimes. One of these incidents was when two men were thrown into the Tigris river in the middle of a freezing night and those marines ended up getting arrested for it. All Sassaman said was he didn't know about “getting people wet.” Pg 163. In the end, the Colonel ended up resigning and retiring over the issue. After reading this book, I was surprised by what I read. When I read this book for better or for worse, I felt like I was there tagging along. I felt genuinely sad by some of what I read, knowing it all happened. After reading what happened to Miller, especially knowing that Filkins
