Danielle Jackson Carlton - 5 English 11 1 March 2018 The Broken System we call Foster Care Yes foster care is an essential system used to provide loving homes to children, but unfortunately these systems have become broken and can no longer keep kids safe under their care. Everyday children are being placed in foster homes facing abuse, unloving parents, and even death. The system has only progressively gotten worse leaving behind children traumatized to a point where no amount of love or therapy can fix them.
Sitting behind his desk in the Student Government Association (SGA) office is senior Sean Burkett undergrad faculty member. In April 2017 Burkett was elected president of SGA and while it is difficult to get a lot accomplished as president in only one year, Burkett is particularly proud of the role he and the other SGA members played creating a safer campus. Growing up in Michigan, Burkett began his studies at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in 2014. What drew him to UMSL were the programs being offered. Social Problem This article looks at the failure of support that incarcerated mothers receive in order to try and save family ties. Women who are incarcerated result in their child or children being taken into the care of the foster system. This system is meant to deal with children who need temporary care, but in this case is being used for children who need to be cared for long periods of time—specifically, more than a couple years. Because of the extended period of time that these children are in the system the two goals of foster care are being failed; reunification and permanency.

In addition to the maltreatment of children in foster care, another issue that arises is that children are moved from one foster care home to another on an average of every six weeks (NCANDS, 2012). With the changes in the caregivers of children in foster care experience, the more likely they are to exhibit oppositional behavior, crying, and clinging. With that being said, in 2012, 23,396 youth aged out of the U.S. foster care system without the emotional and financial support necessary to succeed. Nearly 40% had been homeless or couch surfed, nearly 60% of young men had been convicted of a crime, and only 48% were employed. Seventy-five percent of women and 33% of men receive government benefits to meet basic needs.
Like I said before, foster care is the temporary placement of a child in a new home. To be a foster parent, you have to go through a lot of training. If you are ten years or older, you have to get a background check. They do this so they can figure out what kind of person you have been and if you are fit to be a foster parent. In your background check, you should include a criminal history search, information contained by a health care provider, information about your credentials, information maintained showing that you have never neglected or abused a child, information regarding any denial to the person of a license, and information to see if the person is guilty of committing a sex offense or serious crime.
() All of those children have to be reminded daily that the foster care system has a lot of problems in it. Most of these children are put in some of the most unbearable situations. The foster system has numerous problems that I think can and should be solved. This includes: children not having an education, foster parents and children not having a connection, children facing both sexual and physical abuse, financial problems, and children aging out of the system. There are many more problems with the foster care system but I think that these are the main problems that should be addressed and solved.
A big problem in the system that they fail to see is abuse. Abuse can be done emotionally, sexually and physically also mistreatment and neglect, all done by these certified state caregivers. There are many stories of abuse, and the abuse comes from the foster parents. We expect the children to be placed in safe homes.

Literature Review Throughout the years, research has been conducted on the effects that foster care can have on children. In the United States alone, there are roughly 670,000 children who have spent time in the foster care system each year (“Foster Care,” 2017). Of those children, approximately 33% of them age out of foster care system. Studies then show that the foster care system has had varying effects on the children who are/have been a part of it. In many cases, studies have noted the effects of attachment for children in foster care.
