How does the painting make you feel?

In my opinion, Four Lane Road by Edward Hopper conveys a calm feeling accomplished through the use of harmonious colours. The light colours create a sense of bliss and the choice of using a combination of blue and green give the painting a serene, tranquil and peaceful feeling. The long leading horizontal lines are utilised to slow the painting down and achieve a sense of balance. The painting evokes emotions through use of space making the scene feel isolated and desolate.

However, he is not able to recognise and is ignorant of the woman who is directly behind him who is actively trying to attract his attention, this is subliminally portrayed as he does not look at her or acknowledge her entirely. The man is employed evidently as he is an attendant at a service station, he works long hours as there are shadows behind him. The man is growing older and wiser, demonstrated in hair colour and skin, yet he is strong shown as he is painted sharply with harsh edges.

Name the elements of design found in the painting and explain in detail the importance each element brings to the composition.

The artwork is comprised of mostly geometric shapes which appears rigid and structured. The lines used in the foreground are vertical and as result it shows power and strength but also shows perspective. The lines are also very cluttered which creates rhythm and pattern. In the background, the shapes are organic and the lines are horizontal which appears spacious and balanced. Form is created by the use of value creating a more realistic, life-like painting. The red contrasts against the greens of the painting to draw your attention to these objects.
