Fox, a character played by Angelina Jolie in the 2008 movie, Wanted, is a member of an assassin group, called the Fraternity. The mission of the Fraternity is to assassinate individuals whose names are given by the Loom of Fate as targets “through a binary code hidden in weaving errors of the fabric” (IMDb, 2008). At the start of the movie, Fox seemed to exhibit an egoist ethics or synonymously, “enlightened self-interest” (Gower, 2007). She was killing others, either through assassination or exchange of fire, for the purposes of completing her mission and protecting herself. Her unapologetic and risk-taking character also played a significant role in deceiving, but also training, the main character, Gibson, framed as a commoner who did not know his father or his true identity. The movie uncovers her background story revealing the reasons behind her extreme loyalty to the Fraternity’s cause. Fox shared a story of herself as a child. A man was sent to their house to “handle” her father, who was a federal judge at the time. Tied to a chair across from her father, she was forced to watch as the man burned her father alive. When she joined the Fraternity, she found out that the name of the man was given by the Loom of Fate a week earlier but the assassin assigned to him failed to complete his mission. She concludes her story with the following, “we don’t know how far the ripples of our decisions go. You kill one, and maybe, save a thousand.” This reveals that, in fact, Fox is utilitarian, a position that “the ethical act is the one that produces the greatest possible balance of good over bad for everyone affected” (Gower, 2007). It also indicates that she operates under the fourth overriding loyalty: her duty to
