In “Thank You For Arguing”, Jay Heinrichs teaches the reader how simple it can be to get things your own way through persuasion. Throughout the book, the author uses methods that can help move an audience from Cicero’s three-step strategy to examples with present issues. Heinrichs has been in the media business for over 30 years working as a writer, editor, executive, and consultant. With 3 books published, “Thank You For Arguing” has been used in over 3,000 college courses and has become a New York Times bestseller. In the world of persuasion we can learn from it, realize how useful just one chapter can be, and discover if a book should be continued in educational courses.
Chapter one, entitled "The College Essay Is an Argument", in "The Humble Argument" by Roy K. Humble states: that a proper college essay should be a cohesive, easy to understand dialog of contrasting views, that begins with a simple yet important question, and collection of evidence; then ends with a well thought out answer based on said evidence concluding with the student writer's personal thoughts and feeling about the question, the evidence, and the answer. Roy K. Humble concludes that if a student writer takes these necessary steps as part of their writing process they will most assuredly have written a complete argument, a true College
Arguments happen everyday in history and now a days. Weather the arguments come from speeches, debates, body language, or even a paper; they contribute to everyday life. These arguments can happen by audio or visual rhetorics which help to strengthen the argument and its purpose. Both Daniel H. Cohen and FDR use great rhetorics in their speeches, ethos and pathos, while keeping in mind the audiences they are speaking to. These two men both had a purpose in their speeches, weather it to argue the importance and ways of argument winning, or the future of the country.
And as a reader it is my job to identify the argument being made. One way I was able to assess an article and interpret it rhetorical appeals was in my Rhetorical Analysis.
In order to effectively develop an argument, one must use a variety of strategies in order to persuade their audience. These strategies could be things like new forms of syntax, various rhetorical strategies, or even just fancy language. This debate in particular is about whether or not the United States should support a universal health care plan. One side believes that universal healthcare plan will benefit Americans overall because many individuals cannot afford Healthcare. On the other hand, people believe that America is not ready to take on all the responsibility of upholding healthcare for every citizen.
Over the course of English 1302 at Texas Tech, I feel that my skills as a writer improved significantly. When beginning the class, I knew little about writing a literature review or researched argument. With the help of my instructor’s lectures and the University Writing Center, I was able to effectively get my point across effectively while forming a well developed and well spoken manner. The advice given to me about argumentative essays and integrating sources helped significantly over the course of this class, and the skills learned in English 1302 helped me in other classes this semester when writing as well. One of the things I have learned that influenced me the most was my professor’s advice about an argument.
Structure like this in classrooms only validates that students are able to argue but, diminishes the opportunities of creating values to the scholarly work and voicing out from the side that share the same opinion as the author. This leads to academic rewards for these arguing students as suggested by Deborah Tannen, leaving the rest to believe that they are not good enough for the academia. Based on personal experience, I would like to add that such agonism demotivates students to explore knowledge outside of their field and creates an impression that they are never meant to explore topics that they are least expert at. This structure has to be reshaped to bring back the original goals of criticizing work so that there is a value for everyone in the

Arguments over the First Amendment and its guarantee of a freedom of speech and expression have existed since the dawn of the country, and although these discussions often happen as a result of a major policy changes or violent events involving both sides of the political spectrum, I personally feel as if the amendment should be looked in another light. Forty five days is how long it took the United States Congress to pass a law that gave up the very concept of liberty upon which this country is founded. The morning sky was a brilliant shade of blue with not a cloud in sight in New York on that fateful day of September. Through the analysis of the numerous arguments throughout the course, I was made aware of the detrimental effects logical fallacies have on an argument if left undetected or detected. Although the use of appeals was a review from high school, I initially had trouble distinguishing the appeals from each other.
In my argument essay, I tried to voice a strong opinion, but fell short. Although our process analysis essays and cover letters haven’t been graded yet, I believe that I portrayed a more confident tone and style in those than I did in my argument essay. While writing those particular essays, I focused more on meeting the requirements sufficiently and voicing my opinion effectively.
