If you have ever seen the charm of Ol’ Blue Eyes, you have seen the charisma that once enticed the nation. If you have ever felt the power that encompasses the Chairman of the Board, then you have felt the strength that was once respected by millions. If you know of the man that embodies these characteristics, then you know of Frank Sinatra. He was a man of many names and a lover of many loves, but for years he was also the single largest influence in the world. Frank grew up as an only child who struggled both educationally and socially. He was in constant conflict with the other local boys and the police, and dropped out of school at fifteen, only forty-seven days after beginning high school (Garvin). Frank then landed a job for a local newspaper, where he worked his way up to higher positions until he experienced a life changing moment (Garvin). Upon hearing Bing Crosby singing at a concert, Frank found his true love. Not long afterwards, he quit his job at the newspaper to pursue his dream: singing (“Sinatra, Frank”). His first real progress came when he joined the local singing group the Three Flashes, who then became known as the Hoboken Four (“Biography of Frank”). The Hoboken Four won a local radio contest that won them a six month performance contract, but the deal ended short as the groups disbanded, and Frank moved on to his next job at the Rustic Cabin as a singing waiter. It was there that Frank found his first big break, as trumpeter Harry James came in search of a singer for his new band and hired Sinatra on the spot. Six months later, Sinatra was offered a more lucrative offer by Tommy Dorsey, whose band was considered one of the most popular of the time. He earned his his first and most popular nickname, “The Voice,” with Dorsey, and his career took off from there
