Charles Hardin Holley, or best known as Buddy Holly, was a famous musician who shaped and influenced the world of rock and roll for every musician after his time. Growing up in Lubbock Texas but making it all the way in the Big Apple of New York City, Holly is a true legend whose name will forever live on in the history of music. Buddy was born on September 7, 1936, making him the fourth and final child of Lawrence Odell and Pauline Drake.His siblings were Larry,Travis, and Patricia Lou. Soon after his birth he adopted the nickname “Buddy” from his mother who thought that Charles, his given name, was to big of a name for her little boy ever since that the name stuck. Not liking the way things were going over at Decca Records Buddy’s contract ended early and he began searching for a new way to create music and met Niki Sullivan, Jerry Allison, and Joe Mauldin. The four of them started to play together and formed a band named The Crickets, hearing them play together Norman Petty recorded and produced The Crickets first big hit, “That’ll Be the Day”. Hitting the charts within days after release “That’ll Be the Day” got The Crickets a record deal with Brunswick records in the big city, and Holly was still able to achieve his desired sound. While with Brunswick for The Crickets, Holly also was able to get a deal for solo records under his own name with Coral Records. In 1956, "That'll Be the Day" topped the US "Best Sellers in Stores" chart on September 23 and was number one on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks in November and on January 8, 1958, Holly and the Crickets joined America's Greatest Teenage Recording Stars tour. Buddy and The Crickets were making quite an impact on the world, their music in high demand as record after record was produced. With Holly as lead guitarist and vocalist, Jerry Allison on drums, bassist Joe B. But no one had accounted for appropriate travel, they were all riding a small freezing tour bus to each venue. No one had considered how far apart the destinations were from each other but after a couple times on the bus, Buddy could just not take it anymore. Before their appearance in Clear Lake Iowa, Holly had booked a four seat charter plane that would be ready to take himself, Allsup, and Jennings to their next destination after their appearance in Clear Lake. Their plan was to leave the Surf Ballroom as soon as the concert was over and head over to Moorhead, Minnesota, so they would have time to rest. Before arriving for the concert in Clear Lake, The Bopper started to get flu like symptoms. Realizing he could handle the bus much better than The Bopper could in his current state, Jennings was kind enough to switch with The Bopper so he did not have to suffer the cruel conditions of the torturous tour bus. When Holly learned that Jennings was not going to fly, he said in jest "Well, I hope your ol' bus freezes up."
