In the novel Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, there is evidence of a Hero’s Journey. This is shown through the ordinary world, refusal of the call, and meeting the mentor. In Frankenstein, the ordinary world is shown through Geneva and contrasted with the university in Ingolstadt. In Geneva everything sounds safe and comfortable, and when he gets to Ingolstadt everything suddenly seems to be told in a darker mood. For example, in chapter 3 it mentions how Frankenstein had always been “surrounded by amiable companions, continually engaged in endeavouring to bestow mutual pleasure” while living in Geneva.

In Frankenstein, directed by James Whale, I believe the 'inciting incident' is a combination of events that happens shortly after we see Frankenstein's monster alive. The monster walks into the room while Frankenstein is talking to the doctor, who, of course, thinks the creature is dangerous and evil. Because of his scientific discovery, Frankenstein is like a child who just got a brand new toy that no other kid has. He is excited and showing off his monster. He attempts to prove the monster is harmless and childlike as the creation is only a few days old and is still learning.

Mary Godwin, not Shelley at the time, wrote Frankenstein about a nightmare that she had one night, “The dream was a morbid one about the creation of a new man by a scientist with the hubris to assume the role of god.” (Mary Shelley, Biography).
Written during the ninteenth century, the gothic Frankensteinnovel by Marry Shelly, tells the story of a young educated student Victor Frankenstein, who creates a grotesque but fantastic creature in an unorthodox scientific experiment, which leads to different tragic events. Shelly writes about the creation of the creature and how he is first introduce to his livelihood and this world. In this novel Shelly uses different types of literary techniques to convey the expression of the creature as a baby just learning about life and the world, and by employing innovative literary techniques such as imagery, setting, theme, and characterization, she creates a feeling of sympathy on the readers. This feeling is created through Shelly establishment of pity on the readers by reavealing the creature’s loathsome creation, habitat, or even existence.
Mary Shelley, wrote this novel on a rainy, gloomy day that became a staple piece in literature. She is famous for her novel, Frankenstein, that had a huge influence during the Romanticism age. Frankenstein is about a student who created a monster and was scared of his work of art. Frankenstein eventually comes back to request a partner, but when Victor refuses, Frankenstein comes back for revenge by going after Victor’s family, taking his brother and “wife-to-be’s”, life away. Throughout this novel Mary Shelley use different techniques to give this story life.
Frankenstein Literary Criticism Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, is filled with motifs of Nature and companionship. During the Romantic period or movement, when the novel Frankenstein was written, nature was a huge part of romanticism. Nature was perceived as pure, peaceful, and almost motherly. As we read the novel through Victor Frankenstein 's perspective, we the readers can see how romanticized-nature is perceived as by those who find comfort in nature. This novel also contains, in addition to romantic elements, heavy-filled gothic scenes and descriptions.
At first, the narrator was the one causing others to feel this way, scaring Daniel Russell with its true visage before paralyzing him and summoning enough pain to kill him, only causing the narrator slight head pain and fatigue. The narrator is easily able to shrug off the pain and watch someone else suffer without blinking an eye. However, in the chapter “The violet”, the hosts, or the senior Vonnadorians commanding the narrator, cause it extreme pain because it was deviating from their original plan. The narrator saw it as a warning, to discourage it from becoming attached. In “The possibility of pain”, the narrator discovers that Gulliver is getting beat up when he comes home with bruises.
The grand solarium-like room echoes with the smooth, delicate sound of one elegant puppeteer. All gather around this orator but for a lone boy who sits in the semi-darkened shadows at the back of the dimly lit room, a ‘weird’ sight. The boy slumps in his tattered chair, blankly observing the light blue sliver of sky through the polished windows. The speaker announces, “This is our new student, James,” sharply pointing at the newcomer by the over-sized, battered wooden door.
When writing any piece of fiction, an author 's choice of narrative voice has a huge impact on how readers experience the story. From the slightly less personal yet versatile third-person to the narrow, limited view of first-person, the narrative voice literally provides the voice of literature. It affects which characters the reader really connects with, the opinions that influence them, the knowledge they have, and numerous other aspects. While most authors stick with only one tense, Mary Shelley challenged that standard in Frankenstein. In Frankenstein, Shelley changes her narrative voice numerous times in order to fully develop all aspects of the story through Walton 's letters, Frankenstein 's story, the Monster 's story, and also the
He was formed through behavioral views and experiences due to the lack of education and learning the morals of society. To society standards his physical appearance was not accepted and created a feeling of confusion within the monster causing him hateful feelings towards humans after being shown cruel actions. He received constant judgment and rejection due to his appearance, "His yellow skin scarcely covered the work of muscles and arteries beneath; his hair was of a lustrous black, and flowing; his teeth of pearly whiteness; but these luxuriance 's only formed a more horrid contrast with his watery eyes, that seemed almost of the same color as the dun-white sockets in which they were set, his shriveled complexion and straight black lips" (Shelley, 58), yet the monster did not have any opinion of his own self but what was given from Victor and the society. The creation refused to continue to let this happen and reacted with anger, just like anyone other human would. The confusion and rage continues for the monster when society treats him with cruelty after meeting a family in the wilderness and they run away from him.
In Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley, Victor Frankenstein spends two whole years toiling to create a being which is comprised of the body parts of various dead corpses, for the purposes of science. Finally, he creates the “monster”, who commits a multitude of crimes, resulting in the deaths of many innocent people. These horrific murders raise many questions concerning who is to be held accountable. Victor walked away from the situation he created instead of facing his actions. If he had chosen to stay this could have prevented the heinous crimes committed by the monster as a result of Victor’s mental and emotional Neglect.
In 1818 Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein, a novel that follows Victor Frankenstein, an ambitious man on his journey to defy the natural sciences. In Volume I of the novel, Victor discusses his childhood, mentioning how wonderful and amazing it was because of how his family sheltered him from the bad in the world. “The innocent and helpless creature bestowed on them by heaven, whom to bring up to good, and whose future lot it was in their hands to direct to happiness or misery, according as they fulfilled their duties towards me” (35). When Victor brings up his childhood, he suggests that parents play a strong in how their kids turn out, either "to happiness or misery" (35). In particular the main character was sheltered as a child to achieve this “happiness” leading to Victor never developing a coping mechanism to the evil in the world.
In two different passages throughout the story offers different animations that allows Shelley’s concern for man’s lustful pursuit of knowledge. The first passage allows the audience to get an insight of the creation of the monster and thought process with Victor. On the other hand, the second passage allows a viewpoint from the monster when he exposes himself to the DeLacy family. “I collected the instruments of life around me, that I might infuse a spark of being into the lifeless thing that lay at my feet” (55). This shows Victor’s feelings to the creature that he say instruments that it does not matter that the limbs once was an actual person.
